IUI Intrauterine insemination.
A less invasive treatment, usually used by couple before proceeding to IVF.
In simple term, IUI is a procedure where sperm is washed and placed directly and closer into your uterus. The idea is that the sperm is closer to the Uterus, thus closer to your egg.
The mechanism of IUI
IUI cuts down the time for the sperm to swim into your uterus, to fertilize your egg. For example, you may have insufficient mucus, for the sperm to swim up. Basically the sperm is placed close to the egg.
Sperm is “washed” so that a concentrated amount of healthy sperm is separated from the semen. The aim is for the sperm to swim to the egg, fertilize it and implants in the lining of the uterus.
To be a successful candidate for this procedure, you have to have sufficient mobile sperm and no issues with uterus.
IUI is a no-frills easy to access procedure that is affordable.
According to some websites, the likelihood of success is 10-16%.
The procedure may be aided with ovulation medication such as Clomid, to increase number of eggs released.
Cost of IUI is estimated between
$300 – $1100 without insurance
Some argued that IUI is no better than timed intercourse. This is debatable even in medical circle. Do your research and save yourself time.
